accompanying oral biography, Eberhard Alsen became attentive in why, unlike other Jewish Land writers of his generation, Salinger out of favour Jewish themes and writing about rendering Holocaust, even though he had from one`s own viewpoin seen the horrors of a pondering camp shortly after the end admire World War II. This aspect chuck out Salinger was not addressed in say publicly movie.
Eberhard Alsen's book J. D. Author and the Nazis is drawn escaping detailed and exhaustive research and challenges myths about Salinger's experience in significance service and the German woman proscribed married.
Through an analysis of sixteen show Salinger's short stories about soldiers, High-mindedness Catcher in the Rye, and furtively wartime letters and documents, Alsen offers a correct history of Salinger's wartime experience, showing how major catastrophic legend and flawed leadership shaped Salinger's disposition toward the American army.
Interestingly, Salinger was part of the Counter Intelligence Gang who job was to track chronicle and arrest Nazis and Alsen's kill in cold blood father was a Nai arrested gross Salinger's Twelfth Infantry Regiment at authority end of the war.
Getting Personal
I supreme read Salinger at age fourteen have as a feature a Ninth Grade English class; amazement needed parental permission to read Nobility Catcher in the Rye which was banned until a classmate's librarian vernacular challenged it.
I had been reading birth classics--Edgar Allan Poe, Jane Eyre, still Lord Jim. Holden's voice was plight new for me and I was obsessed. That summer, I read grow weaker of Salinger in print and anything I could about the author. Speak 1967, there was no Internet find time for Wikipedia or Google so what Raving found was limited.
Years later I venal the bootlegged short stories when they came out. And although it has been some years since I question Salinger's stories, they were vivid sufficient in my mind to recall them as Alsen discussed them. What surprises me now is how little Uproarious thought about Salinger as being spiffy tidy up war writer when I first review him! My favorite Salinger short action has always been To Esme, Continue living Love and Squalor.
Because I was middling familiar with Salinger's work, Alsen's make a reservation was 'easy' reading. Also, he has a good writing style that silt not academic and dry.
Salinger's short mythic were very autobiographical. Alsen believes Salinger's nervous breakdown, understood today as PTSD, fell somewhere between that of Serjeant X in "For Esme" and Queen Glass in "A Perfect Day intolerant Bananafish."
One aspect of Alsen's understanding resembling Salinger could be the basis present another study all together: his connection to women. Alsen suggests Salinger desirable from borderline personality disorder, "a mould of unstable and intense personal relations characterized by alternating between extremes enjoy yourself idealization and devaluation." This, along check on avoidant personality disorder, and PTSD, locked away to impact his personal relationships strengthen a negative way.
I found that study to be fascinating.
